There are often a lot of questions surrounding use of medication to support management of symptoms relating to Trauma, Anxiety, Depression and ADHD.
What does an appointment look like?
Your first appointment will likely be an in-person appointment with your provider and it will last about an hour. Traditionally at this appointment, your provider will be gathering information including relevant medical and mental health history. They will also likely take your vitals to get a baseline for establishing care.
Follow up appointments will be scheduled based off of need. These appointments are traditionally scheduled every 90 days for about 30 minutes but can be scheduled more frequently if medication changes or concerns occur. Follow up appointments can be either in-person or via telehealth appointment. Follow ups are typically quick check ins on the current events in your life, effectiveness of your medication, side effects and assessing any adjustments that may need to happen.
Can I have an intake appointment and not leave with medication prescribed?
YES. You can always have an intake appointment and decide to wait and reconsider in the future. Sometimes, it is good to have someone who specializes in mental health give you a recommendation on what they think may be helpful. This is especially true with children and teens who struggle with ADHD symptoms. Your provider can give you education including pros and cons of taking a certain medication and support you in making educated decisions for your health.
What happens if I experience side effects?
Sometimes, side effects will happen. Your provider will be able to tell you what to expect prior to starting a new medication. Traditionally, side effects will decrease after 2-4 weeks on a new medication. If side effects happen, reach out to us and we will work to support management of this either via our nurse line administrative team or get you a sooner appointment to meet with your provider.
How long until I see results?
This answer depends on the individual medication. Some medications are fairly fast acting and some medications take a few weeks to build up in your system to reach full effectiveness.
What are some examples of medication that can be prescribed?
Medications to treatment mental health are a lot more broad than most people believe. Some examples of medications that may be discussed could include:
